Fujifilm Fine Pix J28: The Truth About This Digital Camera

The Fujifilm Fine Pix J28 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom is a compact gadget. Slim-bodied with a glossy finish, it's for those who want simply to point and shoot, and not have to bother about manual selection and focus adjustment. Accordingly, the menu is kept short, and the buttons are easy to understand.
The Positives:

Cheaper than other cameras in the category, the camera offers a tad higher contrast and color saturation levels than the competition. Using the auto scene shot selection mode, I got pictures that were better looking than if I'd used some of the costlier entry-level cameras. Even the picture stabilization mode worked well, both indoors and outdoors, although I had to select it manually.

The auto focus choices are Macro, Night, Photo, Backlit Portrait, Nightlit Portrait and Landscape. A slight press on the button focuses the camera and pressing the button further locks the focus. You can get a good picture at half the level of the Macro settings. But this requires some understanding of the Macro feature. The 3x zoom is another great feature, tailor made for the lazy photographer. The large LCD screen makes for easy viewing, of both pictures and menu features.

I prefer the Lithium Ion battery, provided with this camera, to the Alkaline AA batteries normally used, in some others. There's a mini charger built into the camera, with a USB type plug. The charge holds good for 224 shots, mostly without the use of the flash.

The red eye protection mechanism of the camera gives great results. Also, I found photos taken at night by me to be surprisingly good.

The Negatives:

The camera does not have much on-board memory. Just about enough for 11 pictures with low quality or 1 good picture. You have to buy additional memory separately. If you want to transfer the pictures to a PC, you need to switch on the camera after connecting it with the PC. Most cameras do this automatically.

The Verdict:

This camera is definitely not for professional shutterbugs. Having said that, the manufacture didn't intend it for professionals. So, I would end by saying to newbie camera buffs: Just aim and shoot; you'll love the The Fujifilm Fine Pix J28!
