Tripod is a necessity if you are shooting close ups or clicking night images, because of the slow shutter speed. But also we know that it is always difficult to carry a tripod. So the best option available is to hold your camera properly. Holding the camera with the two hands is usually the best option.
Lessen the distractions
Now the next step is that what you want in the photo. Normally we want that the subject of our photograph is rather the subject. So it is important to reduce all the distractions in the background. Before taking an image, just look from the viewfinder and ensure that there are not any unwanted people, objects and activity that might distract the attention from the subject. Background must be uncluttered. And if the subject cannot be moved to any other location, then the photographer can simply change the position. Take lots of images with your digital camera and then you can easily delete the images you do not want.
Get right perspective
Do not stand far when your subject is object, animal or person. If you want to see some impressive details then step closer or use the zoom option in your camera. If required get down on the knees or the ground.

While taking outdoor pictures, be careful about the sunlight. For example if the sun is at your back, then the subject could be enforced to look the sun, it could result in squinting. Moreover the bright sunlight could also create shadows over the subject. So, click the photos either early or late in the day. Place accordingly so that sun would be at your left or right shoulder.
